UL 1581 VW-1 / FT1 Vertical & Horizontal Wire Flame Test Apparatus

This vertical and horizontal wire flame test device (VW-1) is engineered in accordance with UL 1581 Section 1080.1–1080.14 and satisfies the criteria of the VW-1 (Vertical-Specimen) Flame Test. It is suitable for testing 1060 products, wire and cable FT1 and vertical burning tests, 1080 VW-1 tests, 1061 tests, 1090 horizontal tests, and 1100 horizontal specimen or FT2 tests. The apparatus evaluates the flame-spreading ability of cable or flexible wire to nearby combustible materials when ignited. All testing is conducted inside a sealed test chamber with a volume of 4.32 m³.

Test Method

Adjust the flame height so that the specimen is positioned at the top of the flame. Burn for 15 seconds, extinguish for 15 seconds, and repeat 5 times. Then inspect the burned condition of the specimen. The combustion, extinguish, and repetition cycles can be set to run automatically.

Compliance Standards

The apparatus strictly conforms to IEC 60332 and UL 1581 Section 1080.1–1080.14, and fully complies with the VW-1 (vertical specimen) flame test combustion requirements. It is applicable to VW-1 testing under UL 1581, UL 13, UL 444, and UL 1655, as well as FT-1 and FT-2 testing under CSA. It is widely used across the wire and cable industry.

Test Chamber Construction	Exterior finished with electrostatic baking paint; interior coated with black electrostatic paint for a clean appearance, rust prevention, and corrosion resistance. An exhaust device at the top discharges waste gas outdoors after testing. Two air inlets and a set of pneumatic sealing mechanisms are located on the lower two sides.

Burner angle: 90° for horizontal and 20° for vertical (longitudinal axis remains in a vertical plane, forming a 20° angle with the vertical direction).
